Home Lesson Plan:

Lesson Plan: Super Scrubbers

Lesson Activity 1 (Video)

Personal Hygiene

Recommended Subject: Health or Other

Time to complete activity: 20 minutes

Objectives:

  • Health: Recognize how germs spread and apply practices to reduce germs in our community (e.g., hand washing, not eating food off floor, not touching others’ food, wash fruit and vegetables)
  • Health: Recognize that germs cause illness

Materials:

  • Video projector
  • Whiteboard or other large note-taking space, with writing utensil

Instructions:

Ask the discussion questions below before watching the video. Watch the video as a class, then ask the same questions and make note of any changes in the answers on the board. Have the students discussed what made them change their mind.

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you think hygiene is important?
  • Is cleaning your bedroom helpful to you?
  • Should you be worried about germs?

Virtual Adaptations:

As a class: Show the video using screensharing capabilities. Record changes in thinking using virtual whiteboard or chat feature.

OR

Individually: Have the students watch the video on their own and write or draw about what they learned.

Lesson Activity 2 (Activity)

Bubble Heroes

Recommended Subject: Math

Time to complete activity: ?? minutes

Objectives:

  • Math: Identify shapes and describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, recognizing the name stays the same regardless of orientation or size.
  • Math: Draw or model simple two-dimensional shapes.
  • Health: Recognize that germs cause illness

Materials:

  • Dice
  • Paper
  • Crayons, colored pencils or other drawing materials
  • “Number-Shape Key” and “List of Body Parts” (PDFs below)

Instructions:

Read aloud to the students: “Oh, no! Germs have overtaken our classroom and now we have to get it clean before they can make anyone sick! You guys will need to create Super Bubble Heroes to defeat the evil germs.” Give each student a die and a “Number-Shape Key” and have them roll to determine what shape each body part of their Bubble Hero will be. Then have them draw that body part. Continue through the “List of Body Parts” until everyone has a complete hero. Give the students the opportunity to color and decorate their heroes after they finish them. If you have a sink in your classroom, consider displaying the pictures around it to remind them to use soap when washing their hands. This activity can also be done individually depending on reading comprehension.

Virtual Adaptations:

Lead the activity via video call as you would in class. For students that do not have dice at home, have them write the numbers 1-6 on a piece of paper and pull them out of a hat, bowl, etc. Allow the students to take turns showing off their Bubble Hero and talking about it after the activity. Remind the students the importance of using soap to make bubbles when washing their hands.
